A Small Team. A Very Big Mission.

Thirteen people. Thirty-five states. Over a thousand cooperative loans — and counting.

Why Cooperatives?

We asked every member of our team one question.

“I believe in the power of people coming together. We can do more together than we could do alone. " Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead”

— Christina

“Is there a better tool for economic justice than shared ownership?”

— Mark

“Cooperatives are the most underrated tool for community wealth-building in America. ”

— Michael

“To me, supporting democracy is supporting humanity, believing in ourselves to support and communicate with each other.”

— Adam

“Cooperative finance found me and I'm so glad that it did! I enjoy learning about the cooperative model and ways to grow the solidarity economy. Cooperatives keeps me curious!”

— Ashley

“A simple response to a position for an executive assistant. I've learned so much about the cooperative community, and co-ops are even more important in this economy.”

— Rhonda

“My path into the cooperative world was shaped by a deep belief that communities — not corporations — should control the food systems that sustain them. A career spent in kitchens, bakeries, and food co-ops gave me more than culinary skill — it gave me a clear-eyed view of how conventional food systems concentrate power and profit in the hands of the few, and a firsthand appreciation for the principles of food sovereignty: who grows it, who profits from it, and who gets a say. Disillusioned with extractive, profit-driven models, I found in cooperatives a practical and powerful alternative — one rooted in shared ownership, democratic governance, and keeping wealth circulating within the communities that generate it. That conviction — that people deserve genuine control over the economic systems that shape their lives — is what continues to drive my work today.”

— Roderick

“I was drawn to cooperative finance because of its strong commitment to serving underserved communities and reaching individuals who have historically been excluded from access to capital.”

— Cliston

“My life and work have always been centered around building radically democratic and community-driven structures. Cooperatives are one of the best tools we have to make that happen. And I've always been a spreadsheet nerd.”

— Mark

“Cooperative finance is a highly impactful tool for creating more democratic workplaces, living arrangements, and communities. Shared Capital financing turns cooperative dreams into reality.”

— Michelle

“Cooperative financing is a tool to share resources. It allows us to navigate the capitalist system with greater care and respect for each other as full people.”

— Esther

Leadership

Mark Downey

Director of Finance and Operations

Resident admin nerd since 2021; I hold a Master of Public and Nonprofit Administration degree. Worked in similar capacities in various direct service, community-based nonprofits, both as an employee and a board member, for the past 20 years, and in the entertainment industry as a manager and agent before that. Wanted to try my hand at an organization with a broader impact and really wanted my work to contribute to economic justice. I live in Minneapolis - the capital of peaceful resistance and resilience. I golf way too much.

Memento mori.

Michael Schultz
